Flight School: How to Build Your Own Beer Tasting Experience

Lost Spring Brewing Co | Ocean Springs, Mississippi

At Lost Spring Brewing Co, we believe tasting beer should be an adventure—not a test. That’s why we love a good beer flight: it’s a low-pressure, high-reward way to explore new styles, discover unexpected favorites, and sip your way through the creative range of our small-batch brews.

Whether you’re a seasoned hophead or new to craft beer, here’s how to build your own tasting experience, Lost Spring-style.

Step 1: Know Your Mood, Not Just Your Style

Before you even look at the board, ask yourself: What am I in the mood for? Craving something crisp and light? Curious about bold and boozy? In a dessert kind of mood? Your flight should match the vibe—whether that’s “front porch chill” or “explore the weirdest thing on the menu.”

Start with what you like, but don’t be afraid to stray a little. That’s the beauty of the flight—four or five small pours means you can dip your toes into different waters without committing to a full pint.

Step 2: Mix It Up—But Build It Right

There’s a method to the madness when it comes to tasting order. Here’s our favorite structure:

  1. Light & Bright – Start with something refreshing: a kölsch, pilsner, wheat beer, or blonde ale.

  2. Hoppy & Herbal – Move into pale ales or IPAs to wake up the palate.

  3. Malty & Mellow – Try something richer like an amber, brown ale, or porter.

  4. Bold & Boozy – End strong with a stout, barrel-aged beer, or one of our seasonal experiments.

This flow helps your palate evolve naturally, so each beer gets its moment to shine.

Step 3: Ask the Bartender. Seriously.

Our crew knows these beers better than anyone. Don’t hesitate to say, “I usually like X—what do you recommend?” We’re here to help you craft a lineup that’s balanced, fun, and maybe even surprising.

Bonus: Sometimes we’ve got off-menu test batches or limited brews you won’t see on the chalkboard—just ask!

Step 4: Sip Slow, Take Notes (Mental or Otherwise)

Treat your flight like a story. Each glass is a chapter, and together they tell you something about our brewery, our process, and your own taste.

Notice the aromas, the mouthfeel, the finish. Does one beer remind you of summer camp? A camping trip? A cocktail? That’s part of the fun—beer is memory, flavor, and discovery all in one glass.

Step 5: Pair It, Share It, Snap It

Flight tasting isn’t just about the beer—it’s about the moment. Pair your flight with one of our snacks or a nearby food truck offering, take a few friends along for the ride, and don’t forget to document the experience. Tag us on social @lostspringbrewing with your flight board and let the world know what’s on tap.

Ready for Takeoff?

At Lost Spring Brewing Co, we don’t just pour beer—we pour personality, creativity, and community into every batch. Whether it’s your first time at the taproom or your hundredth, “Flight School” is always in session.

Come taste something new. Build your perfect flight. And enjoy the journey, one sip at a time.
